Clothes Covering
Wordswain

There was a time,
 1
he recalls,
 2
when absence
 3
was a foreign concept,
 4
clothes uncovering.
 5

Instead, his nights were
 6
spent contemplating curves,
 7
a woman’s body next to his,
 8
her hair spilling over nape of neck
 9
and back,
 10
clothes dismembered.
 11

These times,
 12
flowing hair connected,
 13
the connection of limbs
 14
assembling
 15
a dispersion of curves
 16
and lines, burning.
 17
Burning thoughts,
 18
fumes sending up a vapor
 19
settling into daily ritual,
 20
dancing forever obsessive.
 21

Connection:
 22
legs connected to her body,
 23
body connected to the bed and him,
 24
gentle curve just below her navel
 25
connected
 26
to his hand.
 27

Then,
 28
clothes remembered,
 29
clothes minded.
 30

Now, only single strands of hair,
 31
broken sketches of navels,
 32
faces,
 33
and images of bodies
 34
disconnected from –
 35
clothes again covering –
 36
the actual bodies that have
 37
lain there.
