A Lesson Ill Taught

Sammy dropped out of school.
Not because he wanted to,
because he contracted an almost terminal
illness, which paralyzed him from
the waist
down to his knees—
he prayed there,
hoping for a chance
at a normal life.
One teacher came to visit him.
“You know,” the teacher, sarcastic, “if
you had taken better care of yourself,
maybe this wouldn’t have happened.”
The teacher unloaded
this weak’s assignments.
A year later,
the boy returned to school.
His teacher had long died of
