A Lesson Ill Taught
listen

Sammy dropped out of school.
 1
Not because he wanted to,
 2

because he contracted an almost terminal
 3
illness, which paralyzed him from
 4
the waist
 5

down to his knees—
 6
he prayed there,
 7
hoping for a chance
 8

at a normal life.
 9

One teacher came to visit him.
 10
“You know,” the teacher, sarcastic, “if
 11
you had taken better care of yourself,
 12

maybe this wouldn’t have happened.”
 13

The teacher unloaded
 14
this weak’s assignments.
 15

A year later,
 16
the boy returned to school.
 17
His teacher had long died of
 18

obesity.
