The poem I never wanted

I look at you
trying not to stare
as my love for
you I spare
your eyes are blue
your judgment fair
you tilt your head
and inside I flare
and say
as your eyes glare
“I love you”
with the most
gentle care
(all by myself)
“I’ll let you go”
I’m well aware
and see you through
eyes tightly closed
your look I cannot bear
my eyes too shy
to look at…
and very soon
I forever wear
that choice
honestly alone
