In the Courthouse Lobby

Here I am,
In the courthouse lobby,
Waiting to testify,
Waiting to take the stand.
The accident victim’s fate
Is largely in my hands.
Small dramas go on around me,
As I review my notes.
A child custody hearing
Goes on down the hall.
A woman is pleased.
Her traffic ticket
Cost her only $120.00.
She got traffic school.
I finish reviewing.
I start a crossword puzzle.
People mill about me
In confusion.
The elevators are filled.
The old escalators are worn out.
They’re broken with obsolete parts,
Like so many who walk the lobby.
