more music you like, instantly  gnormal  5 Nov 06 10:44AM Thread Closed

when i first heard of the ipod "shuffle" i scoffed.
"apple is marketing random playlists?
that's not a product!  that's a feature!
it's already been built into every cd player ever manufactured!"

but i must admit, much later when i tried it,
i found that random playlists dug up gems i didnt know i had,
and sometimes couldnt even identify though they'd been there
on my hard disk for years.

well, this is even better
http://musicip.com/

it indexes your mp3 collection by some mysterious aspects.
then you can hit the scan button, listen to samples of stuff you have
and when it comes across something youre in the mood for,
it makes a playlist of stuff that "sounds like" that.

like any AI, it has some weird blunders, but does work pretty well.
funny how radiohead "morning bell" produced a playlist including
several zero 7 tracks, 2 bands i listened to a lot in 2001 but considered
very different.

here's an interesting concept.  i wonder if it works-

"
Once you have a list of songs which you want to use to define a mood, store it as MoodName.m3u in the Moods subdirectory where the MusicIP Mixer is installed (MoodName should be replaced with the name you want to associate with this mood). You can use the Moods/Save As Mood menu item to do this automatically.

For instance, you might create a file called Happy.m3u and store 10 songs which make you feel happy. After saving this in the Moods directory, you can choose Moods/Happy from the menu bar, and MusicIP Mixer will automatically create a new playlist which reflects those songs.

A "binary" mood file is stored as a .m3mood file instead of a .m3u file - the difference is that the .m3mood file contains a binary description of your mood. You can swap .m3mood files with your friends, and they will be able to make mood mixes based off your original playlist, but using songs from their collections.

http://www.pandora.com/

Try this website. You name a song, album, or artist and the website will identify certain qualities, themes, etc of your input and will provide songs (for your listening) that you may soon appreciate.

gnormal did I ever tell you that I love you. this thing is great!

I want to try the mood thing, make a mood file and upload it, and i'll make one and then we'll try them on our own collections and see if it works?

I like the idea of pandora, but something in the execution of it leaves me with a foul taste in my mouth. Maybe I'll give it another shot. I tried it about a year ago; perhaps it's improved. If you're going for the pandora concept, I rather like last.fm.

Thank you Anany.

I checked into last.fm but grew repulsed by the "social" concept.

I have no use for "social."

I'd rather talk to robots.

That is one downfall of last.fm, I agree. Unless you subscribe, the results are based largely on your musical "neighbors". I subscribe though, and then the results become more specific to your own playlists. Plus, you can pick any genre, musician, or playlist and it will create you a radio station based on that.
