just occured to me a problem with poetry in the internet age  noodleman  20 Oct 05 9:29PM Thread Closed

y'know, i get a lot of comments that feel like personal attacks.

here's an example:

"I HATE WHITE GUILT.
Please do stop kissing the ACLU and the rainbow colalition's ass. This ain't 1968.
Its dudes like you (with attitudes like this) that make blacks feel down still, and yet you do all you can to alleviate it with self-awareness and self-flagelation.
Just be cool, man.  If you stop treating people different, then they wont be so different.  And stop with the white guilt propganda.  Its 2005, we have such bigger issues now.  Thisdisparity issue  is laid to rest. You are a day late and a dollar short."

and i realized something. this is a poetry site that is frequented not so much by people interested in writing, or poetry, but rather a place that people look to for instant gratification and shared experience.

additionally, since people come here to speak their minds often, or to peer into others' minds, poetry is often treated as though it

a) has a particular message that absolutely reflects how a person (the poet) thinks
b) is some sort of 'journal entry in verse'
c) is like a confessional of sorts, through which the poet recieves absolution

well, for me, i post poetry here. and sometimes it reflects very little how i actually see myself in the world, yet everytime i write in the first person, which is often powerful as a technique, some person who thinks he or she knows me comments as though i have written an essay.

it's funny. i forget this isnt some bohemian workshop or something.

half the people probably leave here and look at porn or something after a while.

it's the nature of the internet, yet many of us seem to treat this site as thoug it were a serious poetry forum, which it is not. including me.

the above comment was written on a poem that was actually an observation of an interchange between two men. i am not the i in the poem. funny, huh? it's not that people don't "get" my writing sometimes; it's that they don't even realize it is writing in the first place. like everything is a blog or some such thing.

just rambling...

what do you think?

This is a common problem with first person writing.  Not just online, but in general.  Novels, essays, short stories, whatnot... if it is creative fiction, it is oft misconstrued as biographical.

I recently read a fellow students work, titled "Hacidim at the Aquarium", she used some hebrew terminology I did was not familiar with.

I, opening mouth wide enough to insert size seven, said, "Coming from a Catholic background, I would like a better understanding of your viewpoint-- I am unfamilar with the Jewish faith"

She replied that she was not Jewish... and then went on to explain it anyway, she had done her research.

Now, because that happened in a tete-a-tete circumstance, it was okay; but yes, the annonymity of online is likely to cause more stepping on of toes than may be warranted.

Don't let it get to you in any way.
Though, judging by your post above, you are taking it well in stride, and with understanding.

I agree, some do not "get" the concpet of writing fiction.   Or, of various other forms of the creative arts.
