no, i write classical music: string quartets and, once, even, a ballet. i've written 24 symphonies! i love to write music, and i'll be writing it again probably in april... right now i'm writing prose, and i write stories and plays. also, i'm a visual artist and i make films and photos and i draw and paint. i don't do scupture anymore though. i have 12 photographs in the Getty Museum in LA -- in the Wagstaff Collection, if you ever want to see them. i'm totally arty. the only odd thing probably is why i'm here, but you are creative people: you, inspite of what you're laying on me, are all very chatty people and are quick to respond and mean as shit. that's constructive for me. it makes me understand what i'm trying to understand about my own creativity. if this were just an afternoon of you hearing me read, my resonant voooooice, and talking with you all, you'd mostly love me, cause my poetry reads so well. i can deal with this place, you guys can deal with me.

no, cause i just re-started comp about 10 years ago, and i keep them low... they're sort of classical symphonies anyway, and they're about melody and stacking melody so the whole stack comes out like a nice lasagna. i've had two offers, but i'd rather keep writing. that's sort of why i haven't done a collected works.

i did use the symphonies in film score though, for two films... using movements from them. that was satisfying.

after i decide who is going to get my stuff, then they'll probably make the films available at the museum. that's enough. and then maybe i'll have a DVD like brackage had made of his stuff... i think he's way better sometimes than i ever am, though his new stuff sucked.

so, not even the films are available? why do you talk about your music so much but share none of it?

you'd have to be me to understand. i started out writing the usual 12 tone serial stuff, and then burnt it in my third year, the same time i quit harvard, and gave over only to poetry, which i'd done, but,  didn't understand -- i was expressionist, but scattered... like the little genius that doesn't edit, all that shit. music is so much of me, and i always have it in my head. right now it's a mozart thing... and i relate very kinetically to music, so even my typing this out has melody value to me... and i don't know what that would mean to you. i'd just seem fruity and musical to you, if you were to be in my head.

sounds like you just like to talk about the things you've done, but not have to show anybody what you've actually produced.

re: failure as a popular poet  mikebauer  29 Jan 07 10:11PM Post Reply

you like to make cheap shots, and that's your product. and i have pictures in museums and books printed and poetry in magazines and.. what... other things too. i do enough, and i don't want to have to go through rehersals. i don't even like taking time to submit poetry. my stuff will get heard.

anyway, this is a poetry scene, and you've seen my poetry and i've seen what you guys can do with it.
