Home to Roost
Isabelle5

Do mother geese recognize their young,
 1
when in full plumage next Summer,
 2
they swim the same rivers,
 3
ride the same air tides?
 4

Do they fret and say,
 5
“Take care of those feathers,
 6
they’re the only ones you have,”
 7
or ask, “Are you getting enough worms?
 8
You look thin!”
 9

Does the new generation
 10
of all living things
 11
fly free of parental bondage,
 12
at least for a season?
 13

My ducklings still follow
 14
my voice, though not
 15
my example.
 16

They have made
 17
their own nests
 18
of twigs and straw
 19
but they come to
 20
sit by me sometimes
 21

and in rare moments,
 22
they let me caress
 23
their brilliant feathers
 24
and pretend they
 25
are not fully fledged.
